California’s Gold Country, home to the Gold Rush in 1849, combines history, nature, authentic American West small towns, festivals, a sensational culinary scene, wine, microbreweries, and majestic scenery in a captivating way that no other California region rivals. The gold rush continues today in the form of tourism in a region encompassing a dozen cities and counties, including the city of Sacramento, which served as the main supply center for the Gold Rush. From a DogTrekker’s point of view, there’s a lot of “gold” still to be discovered.

The California Gold Country also includes the counties of Sierra, Nevada, Placer, El Dorado, Sacramento, Amador, Calaveras, Tuolumne, Mariposa and Madera. Cities also include Folsom, and Rancho Cordova and Elk Grove.
